Time:

All four seasons from March 2007 to February 2008

Place:

The study area is situated on the Kola Peninsula in the north west of the Russian Federation. The trajectory of the mobile station is determined by the annual migration of a selected rangifer herd (one of the compound herds of the Reindeer Herding Cooperative "Tundra" of Lovozero, Murmansk Region).

The nomadic camp team assembles for travelling along the reindeers' annual migration treks. Members of the team who need to work only in snow-free months, arrive and leave according to their respective schedules. In a similar way, members can work in shifts of, for instance, three months each, according to their available budgeted time and need. Intermediate trips to the nearest village base (Lovozero) are also used for storing up with food, fuel, repairs, medical services, etc.

Team members conducted a two month preparation trip from March to May 2006, with a second brief visit to Lovozero from 17 to 20 November 2006, for final adjustments. Their aim was to solve transport, communication and storage problems.

A detailed description of the Operational/logistic agenda for the First Migration is attached here as pdf file.
